More Resolution More Problems

Read here about why the APS Collective Bargaining Resolution passed in May 2022 is so unfair that employees cannot begin bargaining without big changes. Here are some other problems we want to see addressed:

  1. Restricting email usage

We should be able to use APS e-mail to communicate with each other! The resolution bans email communication:

“Individuals who are serving in a leadership capacity for an Employee Association shall not be permitted to communicate with other bargaining unit members concerning collective bargaining, the administration of collective bargaining agreements, grievances, and other workplace issues, or internal Employee Association matters via theEmployer's email systems or other communication systems commonly used at the workplace.”

  2. Making teachers pay for APS mistakes

The Resolution (Section 6C) says that the Exclusive Representative (or union) has to pay for any errors that APS HR makes with dues deductions.

  3. Limiting bargaining units

The Classified Bargaining unit definition is flawed and puts classified staff at a disadvantage. It treats the wide variety of classified staff positions as one unit. Because all these positions don’t share what labor law defines as a “commonality of interest,” ATU will demand that Classified Employees be given the option to form specific bargaining units, e.g. custodians will bargain for custodians, bus drivers will bargain for bus drivers, etc.
